Hurricane Milton and the Islamic Perspective: A Call to Reflection
Introduction: A Recent Calamity In recent times, Hurricane Milton struck the state of Florida, causing widespread devastation. With winds exceeding 120 mph, this powerful storm resulted in massive floods, destroying homes, cutting off power, and tragically claiming the lives of 16 people. The scale of destruction left many questioning, “Why is this happening?” Some argue it’s due to climate change, but as Muslims, we understand that everything happens by the will of Allah.
The Reminder from Allah: Signs to Reflect On Allah tells us in the Quran: “And We send not the signs except to warn and to make them afraid (of destruction).” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:59).
These calamities are not just random events; they are signs from Allah, urging us to reflect on our actions and relationship with Him. They remind us of the temporary nature of this world and the importance of seeking refuge with Allah when faced with challenges.
Warnings from the Past: The People of ‘Aad and Thamud The Quran provides historical examples of powerful nations who were destroyed due to their arrogance and disobedience.
The People of ‘Aad were known for their strength and impressive architecture, but they rejected the message of their Prophet Hud (AS). Allah sent a violent wind that destroyed them over seven nights and eight days: “As for ‘Aad, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind.” (Surah Al-Haqqah, 69:6).
Similarly, the People of Thamud, who carved homes from mountains, disobeyed their Prophet Salih (AS). As a result, a blast overtook them: “So the blast overtook them in the early morning.” (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:83).
These stories serve as stark warnings. No matter how advanced or strong a people may become, when they turn away from Allah, His punishment can come swiftly.
What Should We Do? In the face of such disasters, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught us practical steps to take:
- Seek Refuge in Allah: The Prophet (PBUH) made a special dua during storms: “O Allah, I ask You for the good of it, the good within it, and the good it was sent with, and I seek refuge with You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil it was sent with.” (Sahih Muslim).
- Engage in Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness): Allah says in the Quran: “And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:33).
- Increase in Good Deeds: Calamities should push us to engage in acts of worship and increase our good deeds, as a reminder of the fleeting nature of this world.
- Help Others: The Prophet (PBUH) and his companions were quick to aid those affected by calamities. We must follow their example by helping those in need during these times, whether through charity, support, or kindness.
Lessons from the Prophet ﷺ and His Companions Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw clouds, his face would change in fear of possible punishment. He would say: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from its evil.” (Sahih Bukhari).
Similarly, Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) would increase in dua and charity during times of calamity, urging people to seek Allah’s forgiveness.
Conclusion: A Call to Action Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods are signs from Allah, reminding us to return to Him and repent. Our goal should not be mere survival in this life, but success in the Hereafter. Let us heed these signs, seek forgiveness, and strive to strengthen our relationship with Allah.
May Allah protect us, guide us, and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
